FEJOYA
Characteristics and History
Fejoya (Fejoya sellowiana or Acca sellowiana ) is a type included in Myrtaceae family. Mainland is South America. Also grows naturally in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and North Argentina. Has been brought to Europe in the end of the 19th century. In the beginning of this century, it has been started in especially Mediterranean countries in arboretums and botanical gardens. Iits fruit is in the size of a walnut and green in color. The fruit seed is like kiwi seed and has 25-30 seeds in one fruit approximately. After the saplings are planted fruit comes after 3-5 years. Its aroma is a blend of strawberry, banana and kiwi.
It is known to grow up in warm climate regions especially in Black Sea, Marmara ,Aegean and Mediterranean region of our country.
Cultivation Locations
Its commercial planting is made in USA (California and Florida) , New Zealand, Israel and Italy. In some countries with the same climates, this fruit is found in some collections. (cine tarim)
Fejoya, brought from Georgia and Azerbaijan to our country with the name Feiko and even Tree Kiwi , 3-5 years ago, is not yet well known fruit by the increase of sapling producers, its planting in our warm regions have recently started.
Uses
Fejoya , in the form of a bush is a multi year fruit, looks like an olive tree and has its leaves on also during the winter. Its leaves are like the olive leaves. Gives branch from the soil surface level, by a well pruning a very good shape may be maintained. The length of plan is about 4 meters. If planting with 3*3 spaces is made, it will be possible to plant 100-110 saplings in one decares.
How and Where to Use?
In fruit salads, ice cream, desserts to add a different taste and aroma.
Storing Conditions
When cut, its color gets dark quickly, so apply some lemon on it.
