MANGOSTEN
Characteristics and History:
The fields of mangosten cultivation are limited with the 6° latitudes in north and south hemispheres. It was tried to be cultivated in 17° but, the results were not successful. Mangosten, just like Durian is not durable for drying or canning so its is consumed freshly. It is one of the most delicious fruits in the world. Its tree grows up to 26 meters. The body of the tree is like a pine tree with black cover and tidy horizontal branches. The leaves are big and oval, the edges are sharp and clustered on the tree. These are normally 18 cm in length and 8 cm in width . the fruits in the form of a small orange , growing from the dark red flowers blossoming at the edges of tiny branch saplings; are in a shiny and leather wise cover in red vine color. The fruit forms of 5-7 slices , one mostly thick and the others gradually thin slices. These slices are transparent white . in these slices and attached to the cover on them, there are seeds with no form of sprouting. The pulp is sour-sweet and the smell is sharp. This smell looks like grape and raspberry but when the fruit is eaten for the first time, it feels a heavy smell like rose oil or lavender.
The best soil fro the mangosten tree are the permeable soil, rich of organic substances, in steam banks. The roots are uncomfortable with the ground waters , so the gardens should be well the trees in garden, to prevent their growing above 5-6 meters , should be continuously pruned and grown under rubber trees for continuous shading. In most places the saplings are shadowed when they are small, and gradually the shadowing trees are cut when they grow, and the Mangosteens are allowed to grow a height of 15-18 meters. The planting spaces are 7,5 X 7,5 meters.
the mangosteen trees, giving their fruits after 8 years from planting; give the most fruits / are most productive when they are twenty years old. The fruits are collected twice a year. Other specific Mangosteen types are : Garcinia Pendonculata, G. İndica, G. Paniculata.
Cultivation Locations:
Mainland is The Malaya island and Sunda Islands, it is a product of only tropic countries like Durian.
Uses:
Provides a healthier body structure as to the Iron it contains. With the Phosphorus it contains, has positive effects on tissue repairs, protein synthesis required for growing and the uses of, Carbohydrate and fats by the body
How and Where to Use?
The slices may be eaten like tangerine. May be chopped by blender and be used in creams, desserts, cocktails etc. Its cover is stainable, so be careful
Storing Conditions:
Should be stored in 3 – 4 ºC , %80 - %90 humidity.
