Characteristics and History
Banana is a grass plant with tasty fruit, rich of starch , growing or cultivated in tropic or sub tropic regions looking like a tree with its purple flower. Banana fruits, just like in seedless grape, breed of the female flowers without insemination. The fruits are in big bunches . On the trees 50 -1 00 fruits may be hanging in these bunches. The bananas are collected before they are riped. Thus it is possible to store for a longer time. The banana trees like cool and humid places with shadows in the tropical regions. The banana has various types cultivated in tropic regions. The banana plant has first reached to Africa by sea during colonization period and then to America over Canaries Islands by the Spanish and Portuguese. The Arabs called this plant “ MUSA” later on , when the plants were named according to their kinds, it was given the name MUSA SAPIENTIUM.The banana family are called MUSACEAE . The word BANANA has been derived from the word “BANAN” meaning finger in Arabic. Besides ,one of the towns near Atlantic in Zaire has the name BANANA.
In tropical and subtropical regions it reaches to a length of 4- 5 meters in 9-10 months. Some types reach to 10 meters. The banana fruits have 40 kinds and more than 250 types. Its fruit length may vary from 5 cm to 1.5 meters. On each of the fruit plant, there are 10 -15 bunches with 10 – 20 fruits in each. One banana fruit gives 100-200 and 30-40 kilograms of fruit. In addition to the known banana fruit there are kinds like “ Red Banana”, “Apple Banana” and “ Banana for Cooking” . The fruit banana is called BANANOS and the banana to cook is called PLATANOS. In April, the old roots are taken of and the seedlings are planted. After intense agriculture for 15-20 years the soil looses its entire yield. Was first brought to Turkey in 1870 as decoration plant. After 1930 ‘!s ,economical agriculture has commenced.
In 1950 ‘ s its production and consumption in Turkey increased . The Alanya- Gazipasa- Anamur coast of 150 km is ideal for banana planting. In this coast region fruit plant more than 1 million is being produce. The bananas produced in Turkey are South China sourced LADY FINGER type bananas. This type is also grown in Thailand and Colombia. The bananas imported to Turkey are generally CAVENDISH type.

Most produced in ; Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia and Equator .
Uses
Meets all the requirement of the body. Provides the improvement of bones. Shortens the recovery period. Prevents nervous breakdown and tiredness. Useful in kidney and joint infections and intestine diseases. People having constant constipancy should not consume too much banana.
How and Where to use ?
The banana may be used in cakes to give taste and flavor. Used in cocktails for decoration and fruit salads.
